I only read the parts of this book I was interested in looking at. I found it quite informative especially the horseracing bit.

Good descriptions and diagrams of British cold and hot water supply, heating alternatives, and drainage. With careful instructions about work which is within the competence of an amateur and what should (and what must) be left to qualified professionals. It opens with a description of the necessary tool-kit followed by a short section on pipes and fittings, then goes on to specific instructions for many of the common tasks.
