Roger Bacon (1214–1294)
Auteur van Opus Majus of Roger Bacon Part 1 (v. 1)
Over de Auteur
Roger Bacon, an Oxford Franciscan, was born on January 22, 1561, in London. He is well known for proposing a grand reform of learning and theology and for his interest in natural science. His vision of science was intensely practical, and he talks much of observation and experiment. Consequently, toon meer he has been represented as a precursor of the scientific revolution. Although recent scholarship has considerably undermined the notion that Bacon was an empiricist anticipating the scientific revolution of the sixteenth century, he remains an interesting thinker. Bacon now viewed as something of an Avicennan conservative, who was impressed by Arabic scientific lore but began to look old-fashioned with the introduction of a stricter Aristotelianism in the second half of the century. Bacon died of bronchitis on April 9, 1626. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder

- Korte biografie
- Roger Bacon, O.F.M. c. 1214 – 1294; scholastic accolade Doctor Mirabilis, meaning "wonderful teacher"), was an English philosopher and Franciscan friar who placed considerable emphasis on the study of nature through empirical methods. He is sometimes credited (mainly since the nineteenth century) as one of the earliest European advocates of the modern scientific method inspired by Aristotle and later Arabic scholars such as the Muslim scientist Alhazen. However, more recent reevaluations emphasize that he was essentially a medieval thinker, with much of his "experimental" knowledge obtained from books, in the scholastic tradition. A survey of how Bacon's work was received over the centuries found that it often reflected the concerns and controversies that were central to his readers.
