A book that is difficult to read, on a difficult subject. The main issue of interest to us in India would be the question: how badly did the colonial powers drain India's wealth and income? The papers reprinted here suggest that we cannot completely go by the naive theory of then nationalists, because the foreign powers did also remit back sizable amounts in payment for the exports, as well as provide services of administration, governance, public works, infrastructure development, security, etc. in lieu of the 'home charges" and payments for government expenses.… (meer)
