A glimpse into Oxford life over fifty years ago. A factual book, but written in a fictional way, which makes it fun.½

One of the most important and influential books I have read on the Romans. It is a classic and an exemplary work of scholarship on the topic: indispensable.

This book was my favourite when I was teenager. I borrowed this book from our local library around 30 times.

Now I found it in book fair and thought, now is time to acquire this to my own library. This tells about life of roman women and I believe it still has something to say a layreader.½

“…This book is about Rome’s image problems, its issues with bad PR. Balsdon juxtaposes Rome’s dominant outlook with examples of just how alien the Romans appeared to the rest of the world. Some of the chapter titles give you a flavour: ‘Snobbery begins at Rome’, ‘Bad Press for Rome’, ‘The Ghastly Bad Taste of the Romans’. It’s just jam-packed with information, out-of-the-way information, that’s really hard to find in any other book. …”(reviewed by Adrienne Mayor in FiveBooks).
