A Daughter’s Secret by Anne Bennett is a family saga that features members of the Sullivan family over some 40 years. It opens in Ireland where the Sullivans live on a small farm. Th daughter of the family, Aggie is fifteen when she is raped by her dancing teacher. Then on finding out she is pregnant, she runs away to Birmingham, hoping for a new life and a fresh start. Unfortunately, the naive Aggie is an easy target and finds herself embroiled in a life of prostitution, booze and drugs.

The story moves back and forth between Aggie in Birmingham and the rest of the family on the farmin Ireland. While her mother, who is more than a little crazy, declares Aggie dead to the family, her two older brothers remember her with love. After many years, eldest brother Tom goes to Birmingham to visit other relatives and bumps into Aggie. Now he must figure out a way to free Aggie from the horrible man who controls her every move.

While this story was filled with more than it’s share of melodrama it, is a page turner. A story of love, loss and family ties I have to admit that I gobbled it up.

ALL MEN ARE EVIL.

AND SO ARE NUNS.

Okay, so maybe it's only 99% of the men in this book who are evil. But goodness, I was sick of it from the very start.

Lizzie just has one thing after another after another after another AFTER ANOTHER happen to her and it's infuriating. Things just get worse and worse for poor Lizzie up until the sickeningly predictable ending.

It was more of a chore than a guilty pleasure and I would not recommend it to anyone.
