A pioneer American feminist sociologist, Jessie Bernard conducted groundbreaking research in the area of gender roles and the changing character of the family. She studied with Pitirim A. Sorokin at the University of Minnesota and received her Ph.D. from Washington University in 1935. Bernard began toon meer her career in sociology as a promoter of social positivism but later became an outspoken feminist.
