A pioneer American feminist sociologist, Jessie Bernard conducted groundbreaking research in the area of gender roles and the changing character of the family. She studied with Pitirim A. Sorokin at the University of Minnesota and received her Ph.D. from Washington University in 1935. Bernard began toon meer her career in sociology as a promoter of social positivism but later became an outspoken feminist. The sociology of community door Jessie Bernard

Written as an adjunct text for undergraduate sociology students in 1973, this book sits on the cusp of a paradigm shift in sociology. The author is well aware of the issues and uses the text to explicate the old paradigms and the problems with them. Fine if you're interested in the history of sociology, but not very helpful if you're interested in current thinking of communities.
