Sidney Bernstein

Version française (VoiceOver ininterrompue) du film "Memory of The Camps" de Sidney Bernstein dont Alfred Hitchcock supervisa le montage. Il s'agit en fait d'un remontage de 1985 sans l'ouverture ni la voix de Trevor Howard. "Ce documentaire reprend le film tourné en 1945, par S. Bernstein, en grande partie à Belsen à la libération du camp. Son souhait était que ce film fasse office de preuves de l'impensable, qu'il soit largement montré en Allemagne. Il n'a en réalité jamais été diffusé. Le présent documentaire, aux images particulièrement éprouvantes, garde le commentaire d'origine qui l'accompagnait et lui adjoint un certain nombre de témoignages, celui du cinéaste-cameraman bien entendu, celui de survivants : Anita Lasker, Leon Greenmann et Hugo Gryn, ainsi que quelques commentaires de l'historien Martin Gilbert."
Le film tourné et monté en 1945 fut interdit jusqu'en 1985, de peur qu'à sa vision l'Allemagne n'arrive pas à se relever. De nombreuses images en ont été extraites par d'autres cinéastes tels Alain Resnais pour "Nuit et brouillard"… (meer)

This film footage was shot in the death camps in 1945 at the end of WW II. Nazi Germany had over 400 camps (Recent research will probably show more camps unknown at that time.) It is hard to watch the "unspeakable horrors " that were found in camps like Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbruck, Dachau, Buchenwald, Auschwitz and several other large camps. Many of these camps were close to large cities and most used the prisoners as free labor for the Third Reich war machine to do hard work without food, minimal housing and unsanitary conditions.
This film was originally directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stayed in the Imperial War Museum for 60 years before being rediscovered and broadcast to the world. PBS Frontline has made it available again. It is hard to watch but necessary for us to see and understand why we must be sure that it never happens again.… (meer)
