Over de Auteur

Considered both a West Indian and a Canadian writer, Bissoondath began his literary career as a short-story writer. His first book Digging Up the Mountains (1985) is a collection of short stories relating the experiences of immigrants in Toronto as they combat feelings of nostalgia and marginality toon meer and try to adapt to their new home. Bissoondath returns to the theme of placelessness in the novel A Casual Brutality (1988), in which the protagonist feels alienated in both Toronto and Casquemada. Bissoondath's most recent novel, The Innocence of Age (1992), is set in Toronto and is a departure from these themes. Here, defying the current appropriation of voice debate, he uses a Canadian Caucasian father and son to describe the difficulties in parent-child relationships, especially evident in communication between fathers and sons. As a relatively new writer, Bissoondath has received some critical attention, but as yet there is no extensive study of his work. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder

Neil Bissoondath provides an intriguing critique of a law and policy in Canada that largely goes unquestioned throughout much of left of centre Anglophone Canadian circles. There were elements I agreed with, and areas that I did not - but of course, as his introduction indicates, this was the point - to put an unquestioned policy into question. He has succeeded, then, in his goal. I appreciated the insight he provided into the different ways English and French Canada have responded to the phenomenon - though I think some attention to francophones outside Québec would have added to the work. Additionally, First Nations are mentionned only in passing, and it would have greatly added to this intriguing piece if Bissoondath had incorporated the impact of multiculturalism and First Nation sovereignty, rights, etc. Overall an interesting read - I did indeed have a "yes, but-" at many points.… (meer)

> L'action de ce roman se situe dans une petite île imaginaire proche de l'Inde. Imaginaire, elle l'est, ce qui le dispense de tout souci météorologique, historique ou géographique ; mais vraisemblable, elle l'est tout autant. Ces lieux pourraient parfaitement exister, ces événements pourraient parfaitement s'y produire. Une fin surprenante et forte vient donner de façon ultime une nouvelle dimension à cet excellent roman.
