This is little more than a retelling of sordid, scandalous, lurid crimes that shocked English sensibilities during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries. Bleakley has little new or important to offer.

Bleakley serves an anecdotal account of many of the hangmen of England from the 17th to the late 19th centuries. The book lacks scholarly depth and academic rigor. There is almost no supporting documentation. It is useful as a source of thought and opinion regarding execution and executioners at the time it was written.
