Lawrence Boadt’s Reading the Old Testament was recognized as a classic almost from its date of publication in 1984. I read this book back in high school when I was a sophomore my youth pastor gave it to me to read I don't know how many times I read it and I still remember reading it on the school bus , it is my favorite book because it made me fall in love with ancient history and the bible and that love. has grown a lot since then. The book itself is sound scholarship and lovingly detailed. Will read it again

One of the classics for intro to OT. Lots of pictures, and standard sources included.

Richard Clifford, SJ & Daniel Harrington, SJ were the up-daters of the second edition.
Reading the Old Testament was recognized as a classic almost from its date of publication in 1984. Without in any way diminishing its famed clarity, judiciousness, and theological depth, two prominent scholars, Richard Clifford and Daniel Harrington, have brought the book into the twenty-first century.

This is an excellent book (i.e., a 5 on a 5 point scale), which is much more than I expect when I buy a book.
'It is designed to guide the student of the Bible through the text and its problems, enrich their understanding of the individual biblical books, and explore the way the Bible came to be written.' And that it does!
I also enjoyed reading it very much. It was easy to understand.
It is well illustrated with maps.

Negatives:
There could have been more maps and illustrations.
