This book borrows its title from "Life on the screen" by Sherry Turkle. It covers virtual communities on the net that existed from 1993 until 2000. Not just virtual communities in the common sense as the Well or DDS, but also mailing lists, forums, usenet, etc.
The last sentence in the book is a quote by myself on a Webgrrls NL mailinglist :-)

This book came out in the Netherlands when the Internet was largely unknown. It is a guide to the internet for women, but as Marianne says, it was mostly bough by men. Contrary to most other books that came out later, this book is extremely easy to read, while being very instructive. Today, it's more a book on Internet history because the net has changed so much since 1994.

As an active participant in HEU, and actively involved in creating DDS, the Digital City of Amsterdam, Marianne was one of the people in a group that brought the internet to the Netherlands.… (meer)
