The Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of… door Mensun Bound
Mensun Bound was the Director of Exploration to attempt to find Ernest Shackleton’s shipwreck at the bottom of an Antarctic sea, the Endurance, which sank during his attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. This book covers both attempts in 2019 (unsuccessful) & 2022, which was successful. The 2022 search was bookended first by the pandemic, and then the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both affecting the morale of the crew. Even so they persevered through extreme conditions and amazingly discovered it. I’m sad I don’t remember it in the news. I too was overwrought about the Russian invasion. This probably won’t be a favorite of mine, the book can be extremely technical, and you have to know a lot of boating terms, which escape me. But I appreciated the history, and the palpable joy from the author from finding the ship.… (meer)
½This is a very interesting subject. I found most of the book okay, but there were two things about it that I really liked. One was the way Bound interspersed his own journeys with excerpts and descriptions from the Endurance crew members' diaries. The second was the way he ended each chapter/section with his position in latitude and longitude. There was a lot of technical matter about the submersible vehicles and the constraints on the expeditions.
The story of how two expeditions -in 2019 and 2022 - went in search of Shackleton's Endurance - and found it!
At the end of the expedition the author had to give a speech and he said he was not good as a speaker. I feel the same with his writing. It is adequate but the story lacks excitement. I’m sure days and days of plowing through ice got boring - reading about it was a bit boring also. This may be much more exciting to people who have read about Shackleton in the past.
