William J. Bowers is professor at Northeastern University as well as a member of the Capital Punishment Research Initiative and director of the National Science Foundation-funded Capital Jury Project. He is known for contesting the findings of Isaac Ehrlich, who argued that the death penalty is an effective deterrent to murder. He is the author of The Future of America's Death Penalty: An Agenda for the Next Generation of Capital Punishment Research (with Charles S. Lanier and James R. Acker, 2008); Legal Homicide: Death as Punishment in America, 1864-1982 (with Glenn L. Pierce, 1984); and Executions in America (1974).
