Not the best on the Civil War. Try "Generals in Grey" a lot better.

My complaint with "Who Was.." is the poor reference on Edmund Ruffin. Nice picture and that about does it. And was looking for "Alfred Eugene Jackson" and found it in Generals and not in Who Was and also the question on "Mudwall" Jackson and that too was in "Generals"

Do agree that the pictures - mostly photos - in "Who Was Who" are really good.

It has been more than a century now since the American Civil War ended, but the passion and fury which drives people's fascination with the long war between the North and South is as alive as ever. The last of the old wars and the first of the new, the civil war is both romanticized for displaying the last vestiges of chivalry in warfare and glorified for its modern advancements. This volume's multifaceted approach to exploring one of the most traumatic episodes in United States history makes this a fascinating book to browse as well as a valuable reference work. Complete with a chronological account of the major military events, an encyclopedia with more than 1,000alphabetized and cross-referenced entries, and selections from the memoirs of the great commanders Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, this volume provides a unique and comprehensive overview of the people and events that forged what is now the American nation.… (meer)

A very thorough day by day account of not only the Civil War itself, but of the events leading up to the Civil War. Good reference book.

Useful referenc, though there are some serious typos which mess up data. Frederick Douglass' death is given as 1875 when it was really 1895.
