A way to positive portayal of the most manipulative self centered man that I have ever read about .His positive qualities are charm, amaing good looks and personal bravery used to make him a well known wildlife photographer primarily in Africa. He uses these skills to manipulate virtually everyone in his life and casts them off when he is done with them. I think the author has a man crush and has also fallen of Mr. Beard's chaming persona..I am glad I never met him.

Mixing personal memoir and vignettes of specific events from the 70's onward, the author talks about white peoples' presence in Africa, but really just South Africa and Zimbabwe.
