Korte biografie
Helen Layfield Bradley was born in the village of Lees, near Oldham in Lancashire, England. She began her art education as a young teenager, but did not fulfill her ambition to become a painter until she was in her sixties. In 1926, she married Thomas Bradley, a painter and textile designer, and devoted the next 40 years of her life to her family. Then she met L.S. Lowry, who encouraged her to paint scenes from her own childhood. From 1965 until her death in 1979, she was an international celebrity. In 1971, she published And Miss Carter Wore Pink, an instant bestseller. It was the first in a series of four book illustrated with her own paintings. The BBC and the NBC networks made documentaries about her life, and the Northern Ballet adapted her work for the stage.

the third and mustiest of the Helen Bradley books I bought after falling in love with her paintings. Will rate it when I've read it.

The story is told once at the beginning then again in slightly more detail under the paintings: told through the eyes of Helen as a child, it is all very charming and naïve. Loved the bits about God coming to live in a shed on the moors.

Still trying to get rid of the musty smell.

original price £4.95, I paid 1p. Helen Bradley is a wonderful discovery, her very detailed paintings are similar to those of Lowry but not quite so "stick". She seems to have been extremely prolific.

Miss Carter (who wore pink) and whom everyone thinks is going to marry the bank manager is a leitmotiv in all these books about Helen, her little brother George, the two dogs, the grandparents, aunts and various acquaintances, all very delightful.

Have not read this yet, but I came across a book by Helen Bradley translated into French in a local antique shop - when I realised she was British I did not buy the F version but searched the internet and found 3 books on sale for the measly sum of 1p. They could not be delivered to Switzerland so I had them sent to my sister who kept them till I could pick them up. They are every bit as wonderful as I imagined.

This one starts with the death of Queen Victoria and the reign of the new queen Alexandra, with visits to Oldham, where everyone did their serious shopping for hats and such, Manchester, Blackpool, the Isle of Man - touching on votes for women and the arrival of cars, which had problems negotiating the unsurfaced roads and had to be pushed uphill - and sometimes towed by horses, considered much more reliable. God (who lives in a shed on the moors) makes a cameo appearance.

I have to find her other books.
