The last book in Max Braithwaite's biographical trilogy takes place in a small rural town in Saskatchewan. Amusing episodes take us from when he moves to this town as vice-principal of a four-room school house until he decides between becoming a principal or a writer full-time. This is the best of the three books, verified by winning the Stephen Leacock Award. Decidedly non-fiction in its telling of the things they got up to in Depression-era Saskatchewan. Both interesting and funny.

This volume covers Max's first year of teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in a very rural town in Saskatchewan during the Depression. He was paid with lodging, food and promissory notes. This year taught him about isolation and loneliness. Written episodically, the beginning is humour-laden but that peters out and the ending is bittersweet. Written in 1965 from a contemporary pov honestly about the 1930s. It won't appeal to those who can't handle non-PC content.

1911-1995. people born then had tough lives but generally got good jobs without finishing high schoo--if they survived the war. people drank too much then and food was terrible.

This is the first in a trilogy of autobiographical books about life growing up on the Canadian prairies. Mainly full of humourous incidents, there are some serious topics too. The Halloween story of planning to explode a WW I grenade in the Chinese restaurant with the owner asleep upstairs gives a view of the racism that could raise its ugly head in the 1920's. The fact that the incident ended up backfiring on the perpetrators in a humourous way didn't reduce the ugliness of the plan.

The volume is full of details about life in small town Western Canada in the period 1910 to 1930 such as the education system, children's adventures, influence of the church, and harvesting the wheat crop.… (meer)
