Trains have played pivotal roles in many mysteries and thrillers, from Patricia Highsmith’s intense STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, to James Bond’s life and death battle with hired assassin Donald Grant in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, to Agatha Christie's iconic mystery MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Though moving, trains can be claustrophobic settings, the proverbial locked room. This is true for Eliza Jane Brazier’s excellent thriller IT HAD TO BE YOU. When hired assassin Jonathan boards a train while nursing a gunshot wound, he did not expect to meet the sexy and intriguing Eva. Nor did he expect their relationship would quickly become white hot. And probably the last thing on his mind was that Eva was also an assassin and her target was him. What follows is a dark and humorous romantic thriller that has too many plot twists to keep up with. Will the lovers end up together, or kill each other, or join forces against a common enemy? These questions remain until the very end. Jonathan and Eva are unique and compelling characters that draw the reader in. It is hard not to root for each of them. If I have any criticisms of the story, they revolve around two things. The story is told entirely in first person point of view, moving back and forth between the two characters. Though it works well, there are times when you have to stop and think about who is the point of view character in the scene. Second, the internal angst that each of these characters faces sometimes becomes melodramatic and repetitious. These minor criticisms aside, this remains a compelling story and a fun read. Highly recommended.

This one has serious Big Little Lies vibes, while still feeling completely original. I couldn’t put it down! Mean girls in horse barns with lots of buried secrets. I loved that the POV switches quickly and we keep learning more of the story. The tension remained taut throughout and it stuck the landing. A definite slump buster if you need one.

Middle of the road for me. Interesting premise that went in an unexpected direction. The ending? Ummm. Hmm.

I’m going to leave this as 3 stars, but I’m reeeealllly leaning towards 2. To say this was a let down is an understatement. So much about this book was supposed to be amazing for me— awesome true crime podcast premise, a missing woman mystery, a cool setting, THE COVER. But sadly, no.

Sera as a character just confused the hell out of me. She’s so blah that she basically stalks and tries to become this podcast girl, not out of malice, but literally because she can’t handle living a real life. You wound think listening to hours of true crime mysteries she would pick up some kind of insight or gameplan on how to go about investigating something— wrong! Sera just goes around making it super obvious that she thinks everyone did it- to their faces. Ummm, if one of them is the killer they’re going to kill your ass.

The ending: somehow rushed even though it took forever of nothing happening to get there. Also, just completely implausible and required too much suspending reality for me to be on board with it. I kind of knew where it was headed, so it wasn’t a surprise, but the way it went down was just
