From the introduction we learn that Karen became vegetarian when she went to college at 18. She ate poorly during the first semester and realised she had to learn fast about nutrition. Lucy Philips Blake taught her how to make bread and experiment in the kitchen. After(?) college she lived on a farm in Missouri for "about a year" and learned how to cook with the many vegetable crops and then she went on to run Barnett's Health Food Restaurant in Columbia,Missouri for 8 months. Her Strawberry-and-banana pie won her "Cook of the Week" by the Columbia Tribune.

Some time during all this she met and married Pat and they "go camping and hiking at every opportunity - aiming to be as close to nature and as far from telephones and timetables as possible".

Those were the days!

On the back cover we learn "Industrious, bright and pretty Karen Brooks.....At age 24, she is an accomplished classical pianist, a poet, a seamstress, and is the creator of a new style of candlecraft, displayed at art centers and in gift shops throughout the West."

And we catch her pretty face as she does something industrious in the kitchen.
