When Mom wrote she always saved the best for last. The P.S. notes written to Jackson Brown and his sisters offered encouragement, humor and loving advice.

It made me smile and laugh.

Initially I wished it had given attribution to the contributors. But I soon got over that. I spread the reading out over a few days so as to better absorb the good advice. This is a small, gift size book. Therefore it is a quick read. Most pages have four sentences. Calling it a “self-help” book is kind of a misnomer, but that’s where I decided to shelve it.

Ones from children were often humorous.

I’ve learned that the older people shared the most meaningful lessons. Age 70 , 80 & 90 were the best.

I started my own list of “I’ve learned...” (The above “I’ve learned” is #5 on my list.)

H. Jackson Brown, Jr. originally wrote Life's Little Instruction Book™ as a gift for his son who was leaving home to begin his freshman year in college. Brown says, "I read years ago that it was not the responsibility of parents to pave the road for their children but to provide a road map, and I wanted to provide him with what I had learned about living a happy and rewarding life." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is a guidebook that gently points the way to happiness and fulfillment. The observations are direct, simple, and as practical as an umbrella.

"But it's not just for young people," says Brown. "Most of us already know how to live a successful and purposeful life. We know we should be more understanding and thoughtful, more responsible, courageous and appreciative. It's just that we sometimes need reminding." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is that reminder, as well as the perfect gift for a relative or a friend who needs encouragement at any time of the year.(Amazon)

A cute book full of motherly wisdom and funny quips. Would make an excellent gift to a child on graduation and such.

A breezy little read. Some of the quotes are pretty clever. A couple of my favorites:

"I've learned there's no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs."

"I've learned that meeting interesting people depends less on where you go and more on who you are."

The "Live and Learn and Pass It On" set of books include multiple volumes of "life teachings" as collected and compiled over a number of years. These anonymous nuggets of wisdom range from the profound and thoughtful to the humorous and entertaining. The latest publication contains the "Complete" compilation of 3 volumes of knowledge. The author/editor gathered hundreds and thousands of comments from children, teens, young adults, middle aged adults and elderly adults.

Each statement begins with the phrase "I have learned that..." and includes some life lesson that each individual has learned. I loved the wide variety of bits of learning ranging from how to get along with family members, how to keep an eye on finances and when not to ask your parents to give you something.

I found myself nodding knowingly to some bits of advice and remembering when I learned that lesson myself (for example, learning the difference between a "bulb" and a "clove" of garlic). I laughed at some of the simple observations of children. And I made mental notes of some of the observations of those older and more knowledgable than myself.

The book has a lot of fun simple anectdotes and thoughts. It can certainly be read cover-to-cover and provide some good smiles and learneing but it can also make for a nice "coffee table" book to sit on the counter and just pick up and turn to a random page.

The only real complaint I can voice would be that I would have liked to have seen some sort of organization. While it was fun to just read all these random bits of learning, I think it might be valuable to have the quotes chunked up by subject so that perhaps I could turn to the book as a reference for quick quotes or advice on some particular point I'm working on. One possible help for this would be an Index listing topics and then just doing a general page number reference.

Still, it's a fun book and brought a lot of smiles and grins.

Excellent advice and good quotes about kindness, generosity, simple pleasures, marriage, and parenting. Here's one I like (living as I do in a house full of basketball players): "If all I'm remembered for is being a good basketball player, then I've done a bad job with the rest of my life." ---Isiah Thomas.

A nice list of things to remember before the holidays come to make this stressful time less stressful. These are simple ideas that you can try to make this Christmas different from previous years. Unlike one of the other books I read to simplify your holiday season that was very negative in its tone this one takes a more positive look at what you can do to have a better holiday season.½

A nice read to make changes in your life, to make it better. Some of these suggestions are obvious like 511. Call your Mother to 358. Be decisive even if you are wrong. Like the title says they are 511 suggestions take what you need and disregard the rest.

I don't like it as much as a 365 Bible Verses-A-Year Page-A-Day Calendar 2008 but I'm not disappointed I bought it either. It might be more useful if I had a use for the sticky-note style pages, which I don't, or if it wasn't constantly being covered with paperwork. Something else I don't like about it, or care for, really, is you're, kind of, told what to get out of each Bible passage, instead of having to think about what is being said.
