This is what flash can be, what it's supposed to be. Randall Brown is teacher, a contributor to The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction, former editor of SmokeLong Quarterly, current editor of The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts. In the back blurbs, Barry Graham writes, "He proves on every page that he knows what is means to be human," and that's the best description I can think of: little sparkling gems of humanity. They draw the reader in immediately, some opening with a surprising situation (the narrator discoveringhis pregnant wife eating ants off the kitchen floor, his wife in bed with Spiderman) some with rituals and questions. The wonder in these is how the author rides one surprise to the next, and then the next, until he makes a whole and perfect story.… (meer)
