This comedy has a dark side, about female misery at the hands of men (who generally come out very badly). Tamsin Grieg and Gemma Arterton are very good in highly contrasted roles, and there is an authentic atmosphere of the English countryside.

Wow. Wow, wow. This is now my favourite version of Antigone. Such a harrowing experience, black vs white, ‘civilisation’ vs war-torn horror.

A modern updating of Greek tragedy, particularly the tragedy of Antigone, with Phaedra thrown in for good measure. Complete with cell phones and modern military warcraft, the story is a workable, if somewhat pedestrian, retelling. In a Thebes that is newly democratic, Eurydice has won the presidential election and appointed an almost all female cabinet. She continues to have to deal with rebels who support Polynieces, lying dead and unburied. Bankruptcy is also a problem, bringing Theseus from Athens in a bid to convince him to assist Thebes; meanwhile, his bride Phaedra is having a crisis at home. Interesting theme, but a bit trite and overwrought for great theatre.

A mysterious man puts moves on his ward's governess.

Very pretty, but dull. I expect I would have liked it less if I had had any familiarity with Jane Eyre before watching it.

A black comedy about an unlikely group of dinner guests. The food is terrible, the company is worse. There is a further complication of the intrusion by a young man who crashed his van and needs a telephone; he joins the party. But who is he? The mysterious waiter adds an element of suspense to an already sinister group. Well written, with just the right plot twists.
