I cannot give a full review on this book as I gave up on it half way through. It is written in the early 1900's, when the style was flamboyant, romantic and effusive. Kit Carson is presented as a man who can do no wrong. Much as I understand the various viewpoints on the conquering of the West, and the fact that people saw things differently then, I simply cannot enjoy, or even trust a book where the author practically gloats over the carnage. I've read works contemporary to the times which are much more critical and level-headed. This book seemed to me short on history, long on legend, and I'm not sure about the author's credentials. Several of his remarks made me wonder if he had even been in the west for any length of time.… (meer)
