Finally I got through this. Not terribly my field and it's mostly about east Galway not west Galway where I'm from. I was entertained by p 209 "At Moycullen, Pádraig Thornton could not be persuaded by Patrick Callanan and Brian Molloy to mobilise his men, complaining, "what's the use against the army without guns"." (280 Thomas Courtney witness statement Military Archives of Ireland Bureau of Military History Witness Statement 447). This Pádraig Thornton is my grandfather. A man I never met as he died the year before I was born, and despite, or maybe because of this reluctance to allow slaughter to happen, he had a 21 gun salute at his funeral.

Sometimes you get a glimpse of family in the most unexpected places.

Overall, it's not a book that held my interest, it's not really my field of interest but it's not a bad look at some of the land issues that helped with the other issues of the 1916 rising.… (meer)
