The prairie schoolhouse door John Martin Campbell
Although a few introductory essays provide an overview of Western settlement and schools, the book's strength lies in the photographs and other illustrations depicting schoolhouses and things associated with them. The book contains a bibliography although it lacks end notes or footnotes. Considering the photographic nature of the book, few would expect that. However, a person looking for an authoritative text on the prairie schoolhouse would need to look elsewhere.
Thus far this book is the only large format black and white photography collections of the area. The expose begins with an essay titled, “Chaco and Its Architecture” by Thomas C. Windes, considered one of the most distinguished Chacoan archaeologists. In these rich black and white images, the depth and textures of the sandstone and skies are magnified in their beauty. It may be the best substitute if you are not fortunate enough to be able to visit Chaco Canyon.
An excellent documentary presentation of diagrams, maps, text the result of research, and photography. The photography, beautifully reproduced records the remains, such as there were in the 1990's, of the subject and a few related structures. In an era when public schools are often crowded and deemed a failure, the idea of a community's public schooling, all in one rather small room, grades one to eight taught by one teacher, often without a college education, seems preposterous. These schools, however, seemed to have served their own time and places well.… (meer)
