Bailed on this book about 1/3 through it for poor editing and a distasteful style. Take this excerpt from a chapter:

“He gestured at Dave and Dixie. …Daisy kept glancing back at Dash as she spoke. Dash did not look at her.”

For the last chapter and a half, Dash has traveled with a stoned couple Dave and Dixie, who got him high and want to sell him into slavery. But now Dixie is magically transformed into Daisy in the same paragraph.

And this excerpt:

“So, do you notice how Laila is getting a bigger part in the story now? She’s not just following Dash around like a lost puppy. She is walking through the fire, literally. See the plan is – and even if you suspected it I just thought of it myself so you can’t really have suspected it – I am going to finish this story by the end of detention and then I am going to give it to Laila…”

Are Dash and Laila two teens trying to escape brutal rebels in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, OR are they just two teens in detention and Dash is writing this story for his crush, Laila? The former is a good magical realism story. The latter interruptions are irritating and make me ask every time, why am I reading this???

So I have bailed. Not recommended.… (meer)
