Like some others I found it hard initially to get into this book (Paloma just felt a bit like a spoiled brat to me) but once I committed to it I was very glad I did so. read very few dual timeline books these days (as I usually do end up much preferring one story arc to the other but I pushed through and the events in the more modern era did improve)

I thought this was a really valuable book to read about a part of history that I missed (although I was alive at the time the older timeline (1973-1976 - mostly at the latter end of the period) I was too young and self-absorbed to pay attention to anything on the news and it sure as anything wasn't covered at school). I listened to this rather than read it, and the narrator Paula Christensen, did the most amazing job of the telling, adding so much that I doubt I would have got from reading it. Having visited Argentina and Uruguay several times, I found the descriptions of life so evocative and relatable. The historical thread left me with a desire to read more about this shameful period in Argentina's history. The romantic aspect was bearable within the context of the main narrative. Paloma returns to her birth country with her mother and father, an ambassador to Argentina. I knew nothing about Argentina's political history before reading this book other than Evita. The story moves between the 1970's and the 1990's. Great story as she discovers the injustice done to her country and her family. The author tells a great story that was compelling and so interesting. She got my attention.
