Like many books published by Gecko Press, Aleph is a bit quirky. Intended for children from 1 to 3 years, at first it seems to be a simple book of shapes - circle, square, triangle, diamond, but as we progress through the book we come across a tree, a hug and a princess. Most pages are wordless, allowing room for discussion as to what the pictures represent but there are also four named animal characters throughout the book.
Picture books of this type are usually board books, sized for small hands and only containing a few pages. Aleph breaks all these 'rules' - it is large, has paper pages and lots of them. This is a book for an adult and child to share with the pictures sparking wondering, conversations and stories. The large format means the beautifully simple pictures can also be large, making it ideal for very young children.… (meer)

I love this book for beginning readers. It shows how two words can sound the same, but be spelled differently and mean different things (homophones). This is fun way to show examples of homophones because every page shows a llama doing two different things that sound the same. (ex. Sea and see..shows a llama wearing glasses and a llama swimming in a sea). I also like that this book has features that you can lift up to reveal surprises and many different textures. I think that children will have a very fun time reading this! This would be great to put in a class library!… (meer)

This is the companion to Hippopposites and features a rhyming rhinoceros.

The same sturdy blue rhino is pictured on each page with various accessories, actions, or colors. The two pictures on the cover are a sample of what's within - Bat and Hat. Each page has one word. Some of the rhinos are textured, like Mossy and Glossy. The mossy green rhino is covered in felt and the glossy blue rhino on the facing page is, well, glossy.

The book is a little longer and larger than a typical board book. It has 20 thick, sturdy pages and is about 8x8 and more than an inch thick.

It's a great title for all ages of a board book audience. Babies will enjoy the textured aspects, toddlers can find the bold details in the pictures, recognizing colors and other elements and young preschoolers can practice their rhyming skills.

Verdict: This is a simple but clever title that babies and toddler up to preschoolers will enjoy. It would also make a great choice for storytime or inspiration for a flannel board. Recommended.
