Although Northamptonshire will forever be known as the 'rose of the shires' or 'the shire of squires,spires and springs',for the purposes of this book an article in The gentleman's Magazine of 1861 seems to best sum the county up. it is described as 'a county that can offer the oldest church,the oldest font,the oldest Christian monument,the oldest council chamber...a county wherein were fought such decisive battles as Northampton and Naseby
Thus begins the foreword to this fascinating book.In reading it I have discovered much that was new and unusual about a county that I have lived in all my life. A large part of this volume is concerned with ghostly happenings,and although some anecdotes are well known locally,such as the Grey Lady who haunts the theatre in the centre of Northampton and the friars who haunt the large shopping centre others are new to me. here also are to be found stories of murder,of strange creatures and of weird happenings - UFO's anyone.
All in all a book which which is a pleasure to read and own.… (meer)
