Story wasn't that good, my opinion. But the words and phrases he used sometimes was really well written.

It continues to mystify me that Cottam's work is not better promoted. He is a master of frisson, a lost art in the horror genre - "scaring people subtly, without haemorrhaging gore" as his principal character remarks in The Fourth Haunting. Of the two books I've read, not one has disappointed me and this story of a famous "ghost hunter" is one of his best. Highly recommended for fans of horror, historical fiction, and well-built dread.

Not for a moment scary. I kept waiting for something to happened, but the book felt like a long haul to nothing. We have a bunch of people going to an island which is supposed to be haunted and the man financing it thinks it's aliens that kidnapped all the people that lived there a long time ago. (Think Mulder with money) Well so far so good, but then hardly anything happens, well you get to know the people going to the island and suddenly it's a chic lit since suddenly everyone seems to fall in love right to left. It wasn’t bad written, Cotton is a good writer, but the story was just not that interesting to read and I felt a bit let down when the book is finished, I really wanted a scary book about a haunted island, not this romantic book with some dark parts.… (meer)
