Read on a van from Siem Reap to Sen Monorom -- absolutely riveting and one of the most thoughtful examinations not only of Cambodia, but the phenomenon of international human rights trials I've read. One of the many details Cruvellier hammers home is that most of the Khmer Rouge's victims were themselves Khmer Rouge cadre. I am hard-pressed to think of another genocidal regime that did the same. I disagreed with some of his analysis, but overall this belongs in the library of anyone interested in probing the inner depths of the worst human beings can do to each other.… (meer)

Writer Philip Gourevitch has chosen to discuss Thierry Cruvellier’s Le Tribunal des Vaincus  on FiveBooks as one of the top five on his subject - Rwanda, saying that:



"...This is the only serious account of the workings of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, in Arusha, Tanzania. The tribunal has tried fewer than 50 cases and achieved maybe 40 convictions. It’s part of the story of Rwanda, that nobody’s ever paid much attention. Ask anybody if they know about the Rwandan genocide and they’ll say yes. But ask them if they know who the Pol Pot figure was, or what was the name of the party, and it strangely draws a blank...."
