Elizabeth Daryush (1887–1977)

Elizabeth Bridges Daryush was born in the village of Boar’s Hill, near Oxford, England, where she spent most of her life. Her father Robert Bridges was the poet laureate for 17 years from 1913. She grew up in a highly cultured home and was educated at home. She followed her father into a literary career, and published her early work, including Sonnets from Hafez and other Verses (1921) under her birth name Elizabeth Bridges. In 1923, she married Ali Akbar Daryush, whom she met while he was studying at Oxford University, and spent four years living in his native Persia. There she learned Persian and published translations of Persian poetry. The couple returned to England and Boar's Hill in 1927.
