Aliette de Bodard was born in the United States, and grew up in France. She studied computer science and applied mathematics at Ecole Polytchnique, one of France's top engineering schools. She began writing fiction to distract herself from her classwork, and completed two novels before finishing toon meer her studies. She is a system engineer and writer of speculative fiction. Her works include the Obsidian and Blood trilogy and The House of Shattered Wings. Her short fiction has received two Nebula Awards, a Locus Award, and a British Science Fiction Award. Unfortunately ninety-six pages is not enough for the story to reach its full potential; it's still a very good read, but it could have been an outstanding one had it been longer.

Uncanny Magazine Issue 52: May/June 2023 door Aliette de Bodard

I picked this one up to read when I did because the Aliette de Bodard story was on various awards lists this year. I enjoyed that story, though the rest of the magazine was not as enjoyable for me. There were some pieces I liked more than others, but in general this issue was not a favorite. Lots of the pieces were not my style or confused me.

The Citadel of Weeping Pearls (Xuya Universe) door Aliette de Bodard

I have to admit that this short read stretched me somewhat, I'm a bit too comfortable in the space that is Western SFF, there's an ease and a familiarity with Western Fantasy and SF that I don't have with other fantasy, and I know that that western fantasy sometimes gets my own culture wrong (oh so wrong) and I'm reluctant to really criticise this books handling of culture. It is a book more about political machinations rather than the people and that really isn't my thing. It also felt like part of a story, a novel trying to get out and give me more. It's an interesting future she presents and I have enjoyed other stories in it. I'm looking forward to reading more but I don't think it will get my top vote for Hugo Series.
It's a story about a lost Citadel and a daughter who lost her mother and about war at the borders. It's full of people with different reasons for wanting to find the truth and a truth that could harm.… (meer)

The Tea Master and the Detective door Aliette de Bodard

I am not the right reader for this book. While the setting, themes, and writing were all interesting, it turns out I loathe Sherlock Holmes characters and don't enjoy reading about them. The shortness of this novella meant I stuck it out, but I was ready to bail within paragraphs of Long Chau's first Holmesian "deduction".

The other longer works in the same universe don't have the same appeal to me as "Tea Mastsr" did, so this might be my only encounter with de Bodard's writing, which is a darn shame. Maybe I'd be more interested if I didn't have the bad taste of Long Chau first.… (meer)
