The breakout character (Doctor Aphra) of Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader run gets her own (well-deserved) ongoing comic, bringing along all of your other favourite new characters like murderous droids BeeTee and Triple-Zero, and Wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan in an archeological adventure that puts her squarely in the crosshairs of both the Empire and...her father? Aphra is snarky and a morally grey character, which makes her quite interesting to follow. This comic is packed with Star Wars lore and action. A must read.

Reread 2022: Doctor Aphra (alongside of Din Djarin and Han Solo) has become my favorite Star Wars character. This comic is a bunch of fun and Disney needs to get on making a film or TV show about Aphra and cash in.

I wasn't really that interested in Aphra as a character, but I have to say this series was really interesting and looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Amoral disaster lesbian gets into disasters with her dad. Excellent.

Kieron Gillen gets it.

Somehow, he can make characters that fit in the OT canon but also completely reinvigorate all the tropes that 40 years of Star Wars has mined to death.

Dr. Aphra is quite possibly the best thing to come from the new Disney canon and I say this even after absolutely loving the Gillen's Darth Vader run and Soule's brilliant Lando series.

I haven't read much of the so-called "deboot" era of Legion of Super-Heroes, when the continuity was reset to be as it was in the 1980s because nothing screams "teenagers of the future" like "making it like it was thirty years ago." Whenever I do read something from this era, I am kinda baffled. Never bad... but always pointless.

This, I think, is supposed to recap the Legion's origin for new readers but also fill in some background for old readers. Unfortunately, none of it is interesting. The origin we've seen a million times by now, and Levitz tries to make it interesting by putting it in the background while putting the machinations of the United Planets' secret police and the Time Trapper in the foreground. It doesn't work. The origin is such a background element that one doesn't really get a sense of why anyone would care about the Legion; it has nice roles for Phantom Girl and (less so) Brainiac Five, but the rest of the characters feel like they are barely there.

What is put into the foreground is even less interesting; I never cared about any of the new(?) characters, and there's less a plot and more bits of a plot arbitrarily strung together with some foreshadowing. It's deadly dull stuff, and the story never takes off.

The idea of this kind of way of doing a Legion origin is okay—the Bierbaums, Giffen, and Al Gordon did a great one during the "Five Years Later" era by focusing on Marla Latham—but the execution makes it clear that these were "secrets" no one needed to know about.

The best part of the book is the damning-with-faint-praise back cover blurb someone at DC picked for the back cover: "...the perfect introduction to the 'Legion of Super-Heroes' in general. It feels like some characters are introduced with the understanding you already know who they are and while it's still quite entertaining, it's not the ground zero I'd expected early on." It explicitly says it doesn't give good background to the characters, but they slapped it on the cover anyway! Note that in the actual review, the first sentence is "I'm not 100% convinced 'Legion: Secret Origin' would be the perfect introduction to the 'Legion of Super-Heroes' in general." so it's a pretty unethical use of ellipses as well. But given the quality of the book, this is probably the best blurb they could find. It's not even so bad it's good, it's the kind of thing you'll forget about a few days after reading it.

The first in the series focusing on Doctor Aphra and her not so merry men(well robots and a Wookie).

I have only ever read stories involving her in the main Star Wars books and she is a well-rounded, funny and a tight rope walker between evil and money and, actually that is about it. Triple 0, Bee Tee and Black Krrsantan are superb additions to the Star Wars Universe as well.

However, this first book is obviously the writers and artists finding their feet with the characters, there are superb elements and fine storytelling throughout but it has not hit its stride yet. I am most definitely going to stick with it until it does.

The Doctor is definitely in!

I got this out of the Hummelstown Library for me and Olivia-Grace.

This was certainly fun. Much more than the Obi-Wan & Anakin graphic novel. This had a lot more to it, and a lot more interesting stuff (Yavin 4, Ordu Aspectu, the Syndicate, etc.). Aphra is a lot more... 'evil' for evil sake in this though than even in the Vader series. Willing to do things against her dad and behind her dad's back, just for the sake of money.

The Ordu Aspectu was interesting as an ancient - ancient - ancient sect of the Jedi. It was slightly confusing, but easy enough to get a general gist of them.

Theres definitely a lot more that they can do with the Ordu Aspectu which is cool, and the overall graphic novel was fun and lots to see and do, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

I hope the art style changes a bit. Not too big of this one, it was a little to Manga/Anime-ish for me. But it wasn't HORRIBLE, just not 100% top notch in my personal like/style.

It's a fun adventure story starring some less than admiral characters. But that's what makes it Doctor Aphra, and not just Star Wars.

Lots of fun! Think Jyn Erso as a combo of Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Doc Aphra is adventurous, smart and deadly (especially thanks to her Wookie and droid sidekicks). With her flexible morality (if any) she's ready to charge into all sorts of trouble - and she does.

One of my new favorite characters in the Star Wars Universe! Glad to see she got her own series so we get more of her stories.
