Ahmad Von Denffer

This is a very comprehensive book about hadith scholarship, and origins of the written Quran, language & style. Does include Islamic Brotherhood approved commentaries on Quran (tafsir), and recitation notes (tajwid). This book gives a great introductory overview, and I really enjoyed the part about the adventures of the Uthmani Quran manuscripts. Did you know the Quran is mentioned in the Versailles Treaty? I didn't- until I read this book. Von Denffer also does a good job of blasting "the correlating science facts with Quran ayah" fad.

My complaint is that the only modern tafsir that he mentions are from Qutb and Mauwdudi. Ack. Ok, be warned that von Denffer is a raving Jamat Islami guy, but he has still written a decent book about the Islamic tradition regarding the written origins of the Quran.… (meer)
