Being a life of adroit 1880's baseballer Jno. Montgomery Ward, though the emphasis here, understandably, is on his role in the founding of the Brotherhood and its offshoot the Players' League, baseball's first true labor movement. The author is an outstanding writer who combines a flair for the dramatic with an obvious love for period color, especially as manifested in the era's colorful newspapers. However, this is also a bulky book, full of digressions, that I was a little bit glad to finish: if you're like most people and can find about an hour a day to read books, it will take you several weeks to finish.… (meer)
