Cute, ridiculous, delightful, and absolutely a book I'd enjoy reading to a storytime crowd. So funny! And yet such a good model about how sometimes people need careful handling. We can't all deal with loud and startling things!

Crunch, the Shy Dinosaur seems like a great read-aloud book as it really interacts with the listeners and gets them to talk back to the book character. Plus, it’s about a dinosaur! And I really liked the more hand drawn look of the illustrations and the color contrasts.

As a shy person, myself, I relate, Crunch. You and I can dance in our most fun hats—and, alas, get uncomfortably close to people we like—together.

Award Winning Book (Missouri Building Blocks Award, Chicago Public Library's Best of the Best Award)
2018

Even though we didn't have to keep within the theme of animals for the award-winning book, I went with this one because it's so sweet and lovely. It teaches how to approach someone who is shy - this could be a new friend, a pet, or really anyone! It shows how someone who is shy, might react if we are too loud. But also teaches that the shy individual may just be waiting for their time to shine.

In this book, we meet Crunch, a very shy dinosaur. He is even hiding on the first page! With each turn of the page, the reader is encouraged to speak to Crunch. Or sing a song to him. Sometimes the reader is told they are too LOUD! Sometimes, they are too quiet. However, with a little persistence, Crunch starts to show his true colors.

This would be such a fun book to read aloud! Each time we are asked to say hello or sing a song, there is a reaction from Crunch that would be so much fun to act out. As well, it engages young readers to take an active part in the story.

For example, when we are told we need to say hello to Crunch first, that suggests a robust hello is in order! After reading "Go, say hello" I would start by saying "HI CRUNCH!" and enlisting the children to join me. We then find out that we have been too loud. But that Crunch enjoys being sung to, he especially likes Happy Birthday. We are told that if we sing it, he may come back out. I would then ask - do you think we should sing Happy Birthday and see what happens? Why don't we sing it to Crunch, using his name and see if he'll come back out? We would all sing a rousing version of the song. Ta-da! It has worked! Crunch is back out! We find out he loves birthdays because someone has one every day. Then, to the audience, I would say - that's true isn't it? Each one of us in this room has a birthday, don't we? They may be on the same day, or different days. But someone is born every day and Crunch thinks that's special.

We are asked to say Hello again! But it is suggested that we say it quietly this time, so we don't scare him. I would whisper "hello crunch" in a small, soft voice. Asking the children if they can use whispers to say hello as well. Whoa! We were too quiet and now Crunch is VERY close to us. Before reading the next line I would say - Okay, let's try again and see if we can say it louder than a whisper, but softer than a shout? What do you think? Can we do it? All together now - Hi Crunch! Hooray! Crunch is out, dancing, and wearing a lovely hat, shall we get up and dance like Crunch? (Dance or wiggle for a minute or so). Crunch wants to write our name on the rock - let's all say our name at the same time, but very clearly, so he can hear us (whole room erupts with saying their name). Very good! Let's see if Crunch heard us! Turning the page we find that Crunch wrote all of our names on the rock - (to the audience) Can you believe he wrote all of our names on the rock? He must've been listening very closely. But it looks like he covered them all up with a painting of leaves! Crunch is quite creative, isn't he? Does anyone else like to paint like Crunch? (Wait for the room to answer and then ask them to say Thank you to Crunch for the painting and getting our names right). Our voice has startled him and now we are asked to be very quiet. For two pages we wait while Crunch climbs out of the tree. (To the audience, I would making the shh signal, whisper to stay very quiet and see what happens if remain still. Now it's time to say good night. Quietly whisper good night to Crunch, everyone laying down on the floor to show him what going to sleep looks like.

This story is a great one for an interactive read aloud segment. There is so much that is asked of the reader, additionally, there is a lot that you can suggest for the reader or audience to do outside of what they book has suggested.

The Reading Rockets website seems to be very well planned out, thoughtful and engaging for caregivers who are wanting to boost their child's literacy skills while keeping abreast of new techniques. It has a link for other websites and apps that could assist the child, family, and teachers. As well, it provides additional resources on research and how to guide your child should they need help. When I was over on the site just exploring, knowing that I would use it for this assignment, it was just the right amount of blog posts, it's easy to follow and move through. I would highly recommend this site - and even bookmarked it for myself for a later date.

Crunch is a lovely and quiet brontosaurus who has hidden himself in some shubbery and is rather shy. He would like to play, but it will require some gentle coaxing from you! If you are patient and encouraging, you will find yourself with a new friend! This picture book is a warm, funny example of how to engage with someone new, who is perhaps a bit different from you. Lessons in friend-making (such as minding personal space and demonstrating interest in another's hobbies) are delivered so subtly that children will absorb them unconsciously as they delight in Crunch's silly hat and dance moves!

Crunch, the eponymous shy dinosaur in this charming interactive picture-book from author Cirocco Dunlap and illustrator Greg Pizzoli, must be coached out of the bushes by the reader. The narrator gives instructions, from speaking more softly to saying certain things. At one point the reader is instructed to sing 'Happy Birthday' - Crunch's favorite song. The book ends with Crunch falling asleep, and the reader being coached to do likewise...

A delightful little interactive bedtime book, Crunch, The Shy Dinosaur pairs a sweet instruction-style story reminiscent of Hervé Tullet's Press Here with adorable artwork. Young children who dream of having a dinosaur friend will warm to the shy brontosaurus here, and will enjoy getting involved in the story and (seemingly) effecting its direction. Recommended to young dinosaur lovers, and to anyone looking for more interactive picture-books.

Art: Good
Storytime: Highly Recommended

This fun and interactive picture book introduces Crunch, a shy dinosaur, and encourages you to befriend him with kindness. The story is funny and the art is cute! This would make for a great addition to any storytimes about kindness or dinosaurs.

What a hilarious and fun book! An especially good one to read aloud. Our narrator in the story is a mouse, complete with a cute bow-tie, who keeps reminding us how un-fun the book will be until... a party breaks loose. No need to fear though. It was definitely not fun. Or was it?

A great book to add to your list of hilarious giggle-inducers. Sarcasm is strong in the story, and perhaps it would be more funny for 4th or 5th grade who can understand the idea behind sarcasm.

Little mouse is just sure that this book will not be any fun. As he moves along the pages he meets interesting characters doing interesting things. Will he finally have fun?
Preschoolers will stop what they are doing to listen to why a book will not be fun. The humorous, brightly colored illustrations combine with the imaginative text to motivate even the most reluctant preschoolers to get involved in the reading of this title. This book fosters the literacy practices of play, talking and reading.
