My best sum-up: a much more enjoyable Expendables! Very funny and lots of action! There were a lot of jokes throughout that keep the book light.

A few iffy things: I had a hard time remembering that it's set in England. Also based on the reference to an iPhone 11, I assumed the book takes place 4 or so years in the future but there are a lot of major changes to the current police system in London (such as everyone heavily packing) that seem like that kind of overhaul would take a much longer time! There were also a bunch of uncomfortable sexist comments about the female characters (only two main ones, the rest of the book is overpowered by males). It just felt like the author could've made more of an effort to avoid stereotypes for these characters.

This book delivered appealing and well developed characters - even the psychopath was written with a touch of sympathetic understanding. The choice of all characters was brilliant, particularly the Silver Soldiers and gormless grandson. The characters worked well to make a mundane plot really interesting. In my opinion Dave Eastman achieved his aim of entertainment and excitement.

A well developed story with an excellent plot. The story contains strong characters with plenty of action. Contains plenty of political intrigue. A very enjoyable read that was hard to put down. I highly recommend this book.

Set in the UK, this rapidly moving tale of what retired folks can do to assist in national crisis when family is in danger is a real winner. The characters are strong and resourceful and keep the reader engaged. See publisher's blurb for clues as I think spoilers are a disservice to an author. Not gory, no erotica, just good, involving writing.
Thanks for the opportunity, LibraryThing!

I enjoyed this book. The plot has lots of intrigue with the head of the National Police force plotting to take over the country. To do so, she is using an enhanced, but slave-like soldier created by an augmentation process. When the issues come to the attention of a retired soldier, he gathers some of his old cronies (hence the name Silver Soldiers) to prevent the takeover. It also has some romance both in the long-term relationship of Campbell and Catherine and in the newly budding relationship of Ryan and Sage.

I do wish the author had picked one name for each character that he would use in the narrative rather than having multiple ones. After a while, it was hard to remember which name belonged to which person and who was being referenced--which meant pulling me out of reading the story. Early on, I also felt that there wasn't much to remind me that the story is set in the UK, so when something would come up that was clearly UK, it would pull me out of the story for a moment to remember, ok, yes, this is set in the UK.

I think this book is a good book. I enjoyed it and could not put in down. Sometimes I did feel it was a little wordy in some areas of the book but I was not distracted but it. I think I would read another book from this author. * I received this book from a LibraryThing giveaway in exchange for an honest review*

I made the mistake of reading others reviews of this book prior to reading it myself. Luckily, I'm not big on others "reviews," preferring to gather my own opinion instead. One thing I will agree on many of the prior reviews is that the author does tend to ramble on; stating the same idea three different ways in succeeding paragraphs. He also overused metaphors to the point they were getting annoying. However, the premise of the book, and it's intended plot twists, did keep me reading through until I finished the book. The idea of a twenty-first century man being removed to another realm to live a live as the king of a magic-inspired world was phenomenal. I wish I could give full stars for this book, but the rambling on and over-use of metaphors brings it down one notch. I did enjoy the storyline immensely, and look forward to seeing how the storyline concludes in the next book.
