This story was a lot lighter than I thought it would be from the blurb, which for me was a nice surprise. I really like this type of light story with interesting extended families, although the secondary characters really entered and disappeared somewhat confusingly. The book was too long to wait until 45% to start having conversations.

But like other reviews, I also have to critique the writing. The things that happened in the past need to be written in past tense. There was too much telling. Especially in the second half I felt very disconnected from what was happening. And the story seemed a bit all over the place in terms of the goal - is this a story about overcoming past hurts? or is it the opening to a larger story with powers and a mission to fight evil? or is this about his kids and their future?… (meer)
