This is the exhibition catalogue for "Videogames: Design / Play / Disrupt" by the V&A in London, currently on tour. Its fifteen generously illustrated essays give a good sense of the themes of the physical counterpart: generally, the development of videogames and the discourse around them since the early 2000s, and specifically issues of representation, development processes, individual expression and community.
None of the ideas raised in this were particularly new to me: I was a seasoned fan when I attended the influential 2003 "Game On" exhibition they mention in the introduction, and I've seen these crises and innovations develop in the decade and a half since. However the personal perspectives and critical nuance of the authors were very welcome. I suspect the intrigued non-game-player will get quite a bit of insight out of it.… (meer)
