This is a fascinating little book that encompasses the entire range of magic as a performing art from close-up tricks to stage illusions, touching upon spiritualism and mentalism along the way. Although considerable attention is given to sleight-of-hand in the early pages, most of the tricks described in this book are done with apparatus requiring setup behind the scenes.

About the Publication. This book is a republication of the work originally released by Ware, Lock, & Co., London, in 1886.

About the Author. Professor Henri Garenne is unknown to historians of the performing arts. Magic historian James (The Amazing) Randi speculated that Garenne's real identity may have been either Washington Irving Bishop or Stuart Cumberland, 19th century "Thought Readers," each of whom received favorable mention in Gerenne's book (see Chapter 12), which otherwise debunked spiritualists and mentalists of that era (see Chapter 11).

Bottom Line. There are illusions, such as "The Sack Feat," described in this 19th century work that will easily dupe and entertain a 21st century audience.
