Le mie perplessità di questo libro non riguardano tanto le idee espresse, che in gran parte condivido – anzi, forse su alcuni punti sono anche un pelo più radicale – ma piuttosto il modo in cui sono espresse, che mi sembra incapace di far vacillare le convinzioni di chi non ha mai creduto in valori di sinistra o di riaccendere il fuoco in chi per qualunque motivo l’ha lasciato spengere.

Alla fin fine non è stato capace nemmeno di interessare il mio, di fuoco, che è bello acceso e in salute: mentre Thomas elencava i cento motivi, non mi si è smosso niente a livello emotivo – niente entusiasmo – né niente a livello razionale – alcuni motivi vengono esposti in maniera troppo superficiale perché destassero il mio interesse.

Per carità, l’intento sarà stato quello di dare un assaggio delle bellezza e della libertà di essere di sinistra – non tanto da intendere come appartenenza a un partito, ma come aderenza a una serie di valori – ma dubito seriamente che Cento motivi per essere di sinistra possa davvero smuovere qualcunu.… (meer)

The author provides a "fairy tale" backstory for Hawaiian history leading up to the historical figure of the last king, Kamehameha. Placing the women in the foreground of the backstory is brilliant. Too often, attempts to write real history become quackery by omitting the powerful role of women in every single human event.

"My mother taught me that hate poisons your heart. She would say, 'anger is a razor without a handle. It is more likely to cut the one who holds it in their hand'."

Ends with this historical-biographical note:
"King Kane II began his reign in his twenty-third year. Later, when he united all of the Hawaiian Islands, Kane took the name Kamehameha VI and became the first king of the Sovereign Nation of Hawai'i. He would go on from there to become the first President of the Federation of Pacific Island Nations. But his is another story."
