The author is a professor of linguistics which makes her more knowledgeable about language than I am. However, I respectfully disagree with her that complaining about sloppiness in using language is outmoded. Perhaps it is not right to judge people's intelligence based upon how they pronounce words or put together sentences but when the same things make their way into written communication it makes me wince. We have rules for a reason and that reason is to make meanings clear. Yes, we should be prepared to adapt to changes as a language evolves but certain rules should persist.… (meer)
