The story focuses on Zack Gresham, a young man who seems to have his whole life planned out for him. His mother is a successful lawyer who has her own company, and his father is a federal judge. Naturally, he is studying law and he is preparing to work in his mother’s company. Moreover, he intends to marry his high school girlfriend once he graduates from Law School. One year is what separates him from this perfect future. But does he really look forward to it?
The truth is that Zack has always felt pressured by his parents and he never had the chance to make his own decisions. He can even be considered a bit naïve. His only wish is to take an once-in-a-lifetime motorcycle trip through the southern states before he plunges into the perfectly planned life his parents laid out for him. However, he gets much more than he bargained for. In New Mexico he meets Bobby, and the boy turns his life upside down. Zack is introduced to a lifestyle he never knew existed, and he experiences things he would have never experienced if he had stayed in the safety of his home. These things change his perspective, and, at the end of his trip, Zack is a completely different person. He becomes a man who is able to make his own decisions and finally say “no” when he wants to.
“Zack’s Choice” can be considered a coming-of-age story, given that the main character is 100% changed at the end of the novel. However, it is also an incredible mystery/suspense book that readers will find extremely entertaining. Bobby is one of the most interesting characters, and his story is surprising and unconventional. Even though he is very young, he teaches Zack many things about life and what it means to truly make the best of it. Their friendship is strange and intriguing, and the readers will find both of them very likeable and relatable. Eventually, they will reach the point when they will have to ask themselves what choice they would make in Zack’s place.
Don’t forget that “Zack’s Choice” by Harry Gilleland will be free on Amazon on July 7th.
