James Gilmour

From 1883. Owen Lattimore says: "The English classic, notable for clear perception of detail and an intimate participation in Mongol life, which the author's very honest and simple Christian bias does not spoil." He recommends this alongside Huc and Gabet, Travels in Tartary, Thibet, and China, 1844-1846, but it's not a patch on that, and Gilmour's missionary purpose is much more in evidence than that of the aforesaid French Jesuits. Nice detail on daily life and travel. Prejudiced of course; for that I've seen worse, I've seen better, in 19thC memoirs.
