Alexandra Golon

This book was very informative, and I think it will be useful both with my students and with my visual-spatial child. (I did a little dance when I saw the "math facts" chapter. He really struggles with those.) The chapter on taking notes in pictures talked about something I've tried to teach students to do, so hopefully applying some of Golon's advice will work. A lot of the material on maintaining focus and on organization, on the other hand, was nothing new. Except for the point about letting v-s learners use folders rather than binders -- my school's all about the binders, and Golon makes it clear that this is just not a good method for v-s students. I received a copy of this book from a give away on Library Thing. The first thing to note, is that Golon's primary audience are educators. This isn't me (at least in the 'traditional sense'), but I was a visual-spatial learner and have kids that are on that end of the spectrum as well. Mostly Golon offers strategies which could be applied in the classroom (or other contexts, like home) to help kids learn. These strategies are more visual and kinesthetic than the typical auditory learning (e.g. lecture style) you find in a classroom, though many teachers employ these sorts of strategies all the time and it has been some of the stuff that has worked best for my kids.… (meer)

Alexandra provides an excellent resource for teachers and parents in the book "Visual-Spatial Learners". She takes a practical look at the learning style that often is overlooked. The book not only includes information and facts that are helpful for understanding children that learn in this way, but also is packed full of practical advice, tips, lesson plans, and ways to incorporate the visual-spatial technique in one's lessons! As a teacher, I really appreciate this book and find it very useful in relating with my students.… (meer)
