A book Lovecraft praised, not unnaturally as it involves a modern doctor who discovers an attempt to revive an evil cult in New England. The doctor himself is a bit of a wimp, and seems likely to come to an unfortunate end, but fortunately for him, he is lodging with a tough-minded old farmer who is better able to deal with the threat.
The story has strong resemblances in style and setting to Shadow over Innsmouth, though not consciously part of the Cthulu mythos. This edition has a biographical foreword about the author, who wrote a number of other largely forgotten novels, some successful in his day (first half of 20th century) and a useful life of his friend James Joyce.… (meer)
