Bon roman agréable à lire. Néanmoins un sous Tom Wolfe. Par ailleurs, l'écriture m'a un peu déçu, Seth Greenland est scénariste pour le grand et petit écran et cela se ressent dans son style. Très descriptifs, des phrases courtes d'actions, hachant de mon point de vue la fluidité du roman. L'histoire reste interessante et révèle les problèmes de nos sociétés et tout particulièrement de la société étatsunienne (racisme latent, l'exacerbation des émotions sur le raisonnement et l'analyse, ..)… (meer)
I no longer remember what caused me to open this book. I think maybe it was something I read about the author or one of his other books but whatever it was... thank you!! It was thoroughly enjoyable. Marcus gets laid off from his job at a toy manufacturer because they are moving the manufacturing to China. He flounders. Until his estranged brother dies and leaves him his business which turns Marcus into a pimp. It works, trust me.
If you write a satire, you must go over the edge. Like Carl Hiaason with his Fla swamp people. Not far enough and you have a tragedy (no matter what Larry David's book blurb said). Greenland's CA desert characters might as well be chasing alligators (or vice versa). They don't even have dreams worth chasing--they just stumble around: some shoot at snakes, some at store clerks. Some run for office, some run after tanning salon clerks, all try to run from their marriages/relationships, but not their dogs. A Sarah Palin look-alike, a cold-eyed political op, and three canines play big supporting roles. And meditation 101 runs thru the chapters as on again-off again cop Jimmy works on his anger problem. I was hoping for more laughs but the author uses the unlikely premise to ponder themes of good and evil and social judgement. Marcus, our protagonist, loses his 15 year job as factory manager and due to his inability to find a new job and the impending financial needs of his family decides that when he has the opportunity to pick up/inherit the escort service that his estranged and financially successful brother had created.
