These are not vocabulary quizzes unless you count each "puzzle" as a separate quiz--which makes 401 for the entire book. Instead this is one singular long vocabulary quiz. The author should have broken this into separate quizzes with 20 to 25 definitions where one guesses the word. Some terms are easier than others--and some really could have more than one correct answer, although the author only records one. Not recommended. I won a Kindle copy through a GoodReads giveaway. No review was required although one was encouraged.… (meer)

Throughout your life, especially those years when you went to public school, you’ve been tested continuously on everything that you’ve learned. You had been given questions and you had to respond with the correct answers. Game quiz shows also gave questions and contestants had to give the correct answers, that is until Jeopardy came along and reversed the rules of the game; they gave the answers and contestants were required to give the correct questions.

What the author, Douglas Grey, has done here in his book is to give readers 400+ definitions and they’re required to respond with the correct words. This results in a reversal of one’s thought processes in being able to match the correct response with the question being posed. However, there’s actually nothing new about this as any logophile [lover of words] will know, since this is what crosswords are all about.

The book’s title describes precisely what authors, like myself, go through and experience as we endeavor to write our manuscripts and get caught up in thinking about the prefect word to use in what we’d like to communicate to our readers, as we repeatedly ask ourselves “What’s that word?”

For wanting his readers, including this author and book reviewer, to experience a “new” kind of vocabulary test and a reversal of our thought processing, I’ve given this endeavor by Mr. Grey 5 STARS.

I’d won a KINDLE copy of this book through a giveaway the author had on GoodReads, and the above has been my honest opinion.
