All our cities will have gone... even the pyramids of Egypt will just be a handful of dust - yet the sarcophagus around this reactor of yours will still be standing. The pyramids of the Pharaohs have been there for a mere five thousand years. But to contain the radiation, you nuclear pyramid must remain for at least a hundred thousand years...That's some monument to leave to our descendants, isn't it?"

It's amazing that this play ever got published or performed. Gubaryev was a reporter on Chernobyl since the beginning, and wrote this play the following summer. It's bitter and caustic, a testament of how every Russian citizen must have felt about the disaster, and I can't believe that the government didn't suppress it, or was unsuccessful if they tried.

Gubaryev spares nobody in his assessment of the responsibility for Chernobyl, and it's clear just how much criminal negligence was involved. Outdated, mis-calibrated equipment; undertrained and overworked employees; the incomprehensible decision to shut down the emergency system.

Sarcophagus has notes of a cautionary tale in it, but it generally just functions as a polemic, against the negligence and corruption which surrounded Chernobyl.
